Year 6 County Football Champions

On Tuesday 1st May our Year 6 football team played Whitgift School in the Surrey County Finals at Leatherhead Youth. Following a successful season which has seen the team win all 10 league games and 3 cup games, they were searching for the perfect ending. Having played Whitgift in the final in the past three years, we knew we were in for a tough game but given our success in the final last year, we were confident we could be crowned champions once again.

Looking smart in their new tracksuits, the team looked sharp and focused in the warm and transferred this to the game with a simply perfect performance. In a cagey opening twenty minutes both teams had chances which saw us hit the bar and post whist Adam, in goal, make a number of important saves. However, the deadlock was broken after 15 minutes with a great team goal which saw Sami hold the ball up brilliantly, lay it into the path of Max who delivered a pin point cross to Josh. He was perfectly placed to guide a half volley into the back of the net,

Again Whitgift came back at us strongly and minutes later we conceded a penalty. The resulting kick, hit the bar and fell to the Whitgift penalty taker who tucked the ball away. However, the referee rightly disallowed the goal due to the double touch. This spurred us back into life and we soon doubled our lead with a fine long distance stroke from Josh which found the top corner. Again though, Whitgift threatened and Adam was forced to make two smart saves before Sami added an incredible third just before half term, volleying home directly from a corner.

At half term, we knew the game wasn't won and we had to keep it tight in the opening ten minutes. However, we did more than that with Ollie firing home a fine left footed shot to increase our lead to four. We were now in complete control and looked like scoring in every attack. In the last ten minutes, we hit the bar and fired over on three occasions before Josh completed his deserved hat trick with another super long range effort.

Soon after, the referee brought the game to a close and the celebrations began.

Below is a video and a selection of photos from the final.

What an amazing season, played 14, won 14. Well done boys, today was a real team performance!
