Indoor Athletics County Champions!
Sporting afternoons do not get much more exciting than the one that took place at Surrey Sports Park yesterday afternoon. Following months of turning up at 8am on a Friday morning to practise, our Year 6 Indoor Athletics team were crowned Surrey champions but in the most dramatic of circumstances.
Having comprehensively won the Elmbridge District event in February, we knew that this was going to be a much tougher competition and we were not disappointed. Throughout the afternoon, we competed strongly but were not winning race after race like we did at the district event. We did however consistently finish in the top three so as the final two relay races approached we knew we were in with a chance. What's more, we knew the relays were something we were really good at.
The girls were up first and they comprehensively finished in first place. The baton changes were spot on. Then it was the boys and their race was captured on film. We are wearing the pink vests..
Another comprehensive victory and we had done everything we could. It was now down to waiting for the results. As the places were read out in reverse order, we wondered whether we had done enough. Soon enough there were only the top three to be announced. Having announced the third placed team, the organiser stated that there was only two points between first and second - probably the difference of 5 centimetres in the standing long jump or half a second on the track.
This then happened...
Quite rightly, everyone including the parents celebrated what was a dramatic win. Only afterwards did I find out that before the final two races we were in third place and the two wins was enough to leapfrog us into first place. We ended up scoring 612 points to Surrey Hill's 610.
Congratulations to every single member of the team, they have worked so hard and shown such commitment and dedication towards their own event this year. It is most definitely a team win. It is also an afternoon I certainly won't forget in a long time. An incredible achievement to be crowned county champions two years in a row!
Below are just a few photos of the afternoon. If anyone has any further videos of the races that they can share, that would be great. Finally, a special thank you to all the parents who transported and came along to support. It is greatly appreciated as always.
