Cross Country Review 2018

This academic year has seen the school running club go from strength to strength. In total we have 331 children signed up for the club which equates to nearly half the pupil population at Cleves. It is great to see so many children committed to arriving at school at 8am on a Thursday morning and running with their friends. Many of these, over the course of the year, have completed the distance of a marathon and received their medal for doing so at the end of the spring term. In fact, there are a large number of children who have attended the club every single week since September in rain, wind, sun and even snow!

As a result, the cross country competitions this year have seen Cleves children run better than ever before. In total over 50 pupils from years 3 - 6 have represented the school in a range of events and these are briefly reviewed below.

St George’s Cross Country - Friday 9th March 2018

The invite from St George’s to compete in their Year 3/4 cross competition was very welcome as it gave our younger pupils the opportunity to represent the school. The course, albeit flat, was over a challenging distance.

Our young runners performed exceptionally well with a very strong showing from all the team. Kitty Scott (3F) won the Year 3 girl’s race and Nico Mavrovitis (4H) stormed to victory in the Year 4 boy’s race. We also had podium finishes from Amelia Malthouse (3F), Amy Hempenstall (4F) and Aidan Smith (4B). In truth though, it was an impressive showing from all 24 runners, many of them finishing in the top 10 in their races and all in the top 20.

Reigate Surrey Championships - Saturday 10th March 2018

On Saturday 10th March and less than 24 hours after the St George’s competition, 28 of our Year 5/6 pupils took part in the Surrey Cross Country Championships in Reigate. This is known as being a particularly tough event and it was great to see seven of our runners secure top ten placings and progress to the Surrey County trials. Once again though, all of our pupils represented the school superbly, giving up their time on a Saturday morning to run in the Cleves vest.

Bracknell Relays - Tuesday 13th March 2018

On Tuesday 13th March 2018, we entered three teams into the Bracknell Cross Country team relay event. This involved nearly forty pupils from years 3, 4, 5 and 6 and it is the third time we have entered this competition. Last year the boys were runners up and the girls finished in third place. We were looking to better this in 2018!

This year we decided to take three teams given the strength of runners at Cleves and our continued commitment to provide sporting opportunities to as many pupils as possible. The girls were first up and all three teams ran well, with our A team securing a brilliant runners up spot, nearly a minute clear of the third placed school. Our B team finished 12th and our C team 16th out of 27 teams in total.

The boys race was an enthralling event which saw our A team storm to an impressive overall victory. Despite competing against the best schools in the area, the team of six, which included a pupil from year 3, lead from start to finish and managed to fend off a strong attack from two schools who were doing their best to chase us down. Our B team came an impressive 4th overall and our C team 13th out of 28 teams competing.

The success in this events clearly demonstrates clear the progress we have made over the past three years, we are very much a force to be reckoned with. Congratulations to all our runners, they should all be commended for their effort and performances.

Notre Dame Cross Country - Saturday 28th April 2018

The final event of the year, saw the rearranged Elmbridge Championships take place at Notre Dame. It was another strong showing from our runners with some impressive team and individual performances:

  • Year 3/4 Girls  - 2nd overall

  • Year 3/4 Boys - Nico Mavrovitis 1st, 3rd overall

  • Year 5 Girls - Heidi Thomson 2nd, 4th overall

  • Year 5 Boys - Alex Didaskalou 2nd, 2nd overall

  • Year 6 Girls - Louisa Cipolletta 1st, 2nd overall

  • Year 6 Boys - 2nd overall

Congratulations to all our runners this year! It has been another hugely enjoyable and successful year. Below are selection of photographs from the various events.
